In 1993 the current Division Blood Bank Northeast in Groningen was assigned the position of World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for blood transfusion. WHO representatives met the Executive Board in January 2005 in Amsterdam and decided to extend the collaboration with Sanquin as a national non-government organization. The entire Sanquin organization including 4 blood banks are now committed to serve as a WHO collaborating organization in the development of safe and sustainable blood supply.
