Proefschrift Wouter Bos

Op 15 mei 2009 promoveert Wouter Bos op het proefschrift ‘Towards primary prevention of rheumatoid arthritis: autoantibodies in the (pre) clinical phase’ aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Het onderzoek voor dit proefschrift werd verricht op de afdeling Reumatologie van het Jan van Breemen Instituut en de afdeling Immunopathologie van Sanquin Research in Amsterdam.

Samenvatting
Reumatoide artritis wordt gekenmerkt door de aanwezigheid van de reumafactor en antistoffen tegen gecitrullineerde eiwitten (ACPA). Wouter Bos vond dat aanwezigheid van ACPA bij mensen met gewrichtsklachten voorspellend is voor het ontwikkelen van RA. Het risico op RA kon nog beter voorspeld worden door de combinatie van ACPA en specifieke genexpressieprofielen. Ten slotte bleek een kortdurende prednisonbehandeling bij mensen met reuma-antistoffen en gewrichtsklachten het optreden van RA niet te voorkomen. Deze laatste studie is een eerste stapje op weg naar de preventie van gewrichtsreuma.
